Background
Calligraphy written by President Ikeda at Nagasaki Isahaya Culture Centre, May 1982 Youth! Scale the Mountain of Kosen-rufu of the 21st Century was first presented during a Cultural Festival that took place in Hachioji in 1982. This song was composed from a long poem written in 1981 by President Ikeda at Oita, Kyushu.
The poem conveys the mentor’s deepest thought to set forth new guidelines for his young disciples in the 21st century to scale the mountain of kosen-rufu. It is imbued with the mentor’s prayer for his disciples to bring forth their immense inner strength to win in all situations and that under no circumstances shall they allow their faith to be destroyed. In February 1979, President Ikeda set off for India from Kagoshima Airport in Kyushu to realise the westward transmission of Buddhism that Nichiren Daishonin prophesied in his writing. It was from Kyushu that this deeply meaningful endeavour began. A little more than two months later, President Ikeda was forced to step down as Soka Gakkai president and became honorary president. The next time he called on Kyushu was on his return from his 5th visit to China, April 1980. At that time, Kyushu members were buffeted by the crosswinds of despicable plots and schemes. It was an insane performance orchestrated by the unscrupulous priests and several corrupt ex-Gakkai members. In the storm of persecution, President Ikeda was not allowed to give speeches or guidance freely at any meeting. Refusing to be intimidated, President Ikeda rose up and began to give guidance once more to the members. As he launched a new struggle, he called out to his comrades, “No matter how harsh the winds or how turbulent the seas, do not forget kosen-rufu! Do not let the banner of propagation fall! Do not extinguish the flames of faith!” The Kyushu members responded to his dauntless call by striving with all their might and encouraging each other to keep fighting for justice. On December 8, 1981, SGI President Ikeda finally visited Oita prefecture, north-eastern Kyushu, where the members had also undergone ineffably bitter suffering inflicted by the self-serving priests who had betrayed the Daishonin’s teaching. Despite the agony, the admirable Oita members were absolutely determined to protect their beloved Gakkai at all costs. The youth division’s activities in this effort to uphold the truth were especially noteworthy. In the face of persecution, they kept the banner of justice aloft and saw the struggle through to a triumphant finish. These events occurred in the year that marked the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the youth division and the publishing of President Toda’s “Precepts for Youth”. On this occasion, President Ikeda was seized by the thought, “Now the time has come for me to present the youth with new guidelines.” Coincidentally, prior to the youth division leaders meeting on December 10, the Oita youth division representatives approached him and requested a new poem to inspire the members as they set off their resolute march into the 21st century. He responded to their seeking spirit, “All right! Let’s do it!” Instantly, the tiny 6-mat caretaker’s office at Oita Peace Community Centre was transformed into a poet’s battleground. For 40 minutes, words poured from President Ikeda’s heart unceasingly. 5 young men and women tried to keep up with President Ikeda and took down his words as he spoke. This marked the birth of the poem “Youth! Scale the Mountain of Kosen-rufu in the 21st Century”. The poem opens with a stanza citing the spirit of the famous British mountaineer George Mallory who was a friend of historian Dr. Arnold J. Toynbee. The lines read: Why do I climb mountains? Because they are there! President Ikeda teaches that it is by bravely taking on challenging mountains of life’s trials and tribulations that one can bring forth one's inner strength. Ascending the summit of kosen-rufu is the grand and magnificent undertaking of a Buddha, seeking to guide humanity to the highest spiritual heights to which it can aspire. The entire poem is infused with President Ikeda’s fervent prayer: You must win, no matter what, Where you are right now! You must never let your faith Be destroyed! In this poem, President Ikeda shares that Buddhism is a struggle to be victorious; the battle between the Buddha and devilish forces; a war between good and evil. Even in the face of the most seemingly insurmountable walls of rock, the mentors and disciples of Soka, united in their shared vow for kosen-rufu, have always been able to summon forth the infinite power of the Buddha to rise above all. He further reiterates the powerful mission that youth holds is to lead humanity and bring peace of mind and security to all based on their ability to clearly see through devilish functions and defeat evil and injustice. President Ikeda is confident that the young disciples are advancing toward the goal of kosen-rufu with a bright, vibrant spirit, joining hands with new friends and comrades along the way in fresh unity. He hopes that his disciples will make each and every day one of supreme value and thereby fulfilling their noble missions in this lifetime. Shortly before that memorable Oita Youth Division Meeting, President Ikeda was notified by the World Art and Culture Academy of its decision to bestow upon him the title of Poet Laureate. The poem was later composed to become a song and it was first presented by YWD Choir during the Cultural Festival held in Soka University, Hachioji in 1982. |

 1980年4月第5次中国访问后，归途抵达长崎飞机场 1982年，在八王子举行的文化节，首次发表了《青年！攀登广布之山》。这首歌是以一首池田会长在1981年九州大分亲手提笔的长诗为题材。
