Background
Ikeda Sensei admired with Mrs. Kaneko Ikeda the cherry blossoms in the evening at Ota • a profound memory that connects to his encounter with his mentor Toda Sensei. (April 1993) The melody of the Gakkai song “Song of Valiant Youth” originated from a Japanese Military song. The song was also known as Young Men’s song in Soka Gakkai. Later a Gakkai member, Saburo Umeki, wrote the lyrics that injected the Gakkai’s indomitable spirit of never giving up.
This song was played by the Brass Band outside Nakanoshima Civic Hall during the Kansai General Meeting held in conjunction with the release of Ikeda Sensei from detention. On 3 July 1957, the authorities from the Japan Investigation Bureau arrested and detained Ikeda Sensei (then Chief of Staff) with charges he did not commit. This was due to the Osaka prefectural election held in April that year where some Soka Gakkai members were arrested for door-to-door canvassing and vote-buying, which violated the election laws. Believing that it was one great opportunity they can make use of to attack the Soka Gakkai, the members were severely interrogated and coerced into making false statements to shift all responsibilities of the flouting of election laws to Ikeda Sensei, making him the mastermind. As such, this resulted in the unjustified arrest of Ikeda Sensei. Ikeda Sensei underwent harsh interrogation during his arrest, many a times late into the night. He insisted that all these accusations were unfounded, but the prosecutors threatened Ikeda Sensei by saying, “If you do not admit to these charges, next to be arrested would be President Toda.” Ikeda Sensei determined, “I must never allow the weak and emancipated Toda Sensei to be imprisoned again.” For the sake of protecting the mentor and organization, I must continue the fight in court till the very end and pronounced as not guilty. On 17 July, two weeks after the detention, Ikeda Sensei was released from the Osaka Detention Center. At 6 p.m., the Kansai General meeting was declared open (at Nakanoshima Civic Hall). It started with an overview of the recent series of events in Osaka, followed by a report on the details surrounding the arrest, imprisonment and release of Hiroshi Hojo and Ikeda Sensei. To some attending the meeting, they were filled with tears of emotion and indignation. Ikeda Sensei's vibrant voice resonated through the auditorium; "My friends, I'm glad to see you again after so long. I understand there are many more members gathered outside as well. To all of you, both inside and outside, it's good to be here with you again! I apologize for all the worry I have caused you, but today at noon, thanks to the protection of the Gohonzon, I was released in good health as you can see. Thank you for your concern and good wishes." "President Toda told us that the third of the three powerful enemies, sensho zojoman (arrogant people who appear saintly or beyond reproach because of their status and who cause the authorities to persecute votaries of the Lotus Sutra), has appeared. However, convinced of the Daishonin's statement that 'great evil is followed by great good,' I am determined to arouse strong faith and further advance the cause of kosen-rufu together with all of you.” “As true disciples of President Toda, let us pledge to polish and refine our faith. And let us pledge to fight on tirelessly together to win absolute happiness and to fulfill the Daishonin's mandate and prophecy of kosen-rufu.” The applause was thunderous. Ikeda Sensei’s speech, though brief, was a passionate cry springing from the depths of his being, like the roar of a lion. Though the meeting has ended, more than ten thousand members gathered outside remained standing where they were in hopes of catching even a glimpse of Hiroshi Hojo and Ikeda Sensei. Suddenly, enthusiastic applause and cheers broke out. Ikeda Sensei could be seen leaning out of a second-storey window above the entrance, waving a Japanese fan. Standing beside him was Hiroshi Hojo. With microphone in hand, each offered a simple greeting to the members outside, before raising both arms high over their heads in a sign of victory. More loud cheers and applause arose from the crowd. The Brass Band emerged from the hall and began to play a Gakkai song just outside the entrance. People who had begun to exit from the hall stopped to listen, forming a crowd around the portico. The band members, who has been playing virtually nonstop since early that morning, now, as if having waited all day just for this occasion, summoned forth every last ounce of their energy for a powerful and dynamic performance. The Brass Band began a rousing rendition of the song “Young Men of Japan.” By that time, the drummers’ hands must have been full of blisters, and the lips of those in the wind section, chafed and swollen. Just then, Ikeda Sensei appeared at the entrance. In the twinkling of an eye, he had climbed up on the stone banister flanking the front steps of the building and, with a Japanese fan in hand, began to lead the song. He sincerely wanted to encourage and inspire his fellow members from Kansai who had sent him their prayers and who on his behalf had experienced grief, sorrow and anger. The crowd immediately joined together in a great chorus, their voices engulfing the hall and soaring high into night sky. Hiroshi Hojo joined Ikeda Sensei in leading the chorus, as the Brass Band played one Gakkai song after another. Following the lead of these two, the members sang on and on, seemingly determined to make their voices reach the prosecutor’s office on the far side of the river. And as they sang, their indignation gave way to joy. This is the power and beauty of the Gakkai songs. They stir the fighting spirit from within one’s life that gives rise to joy. It provides the rhythm for victory and solidify the unity of mentor and disciple. |

背景
2008 年4月，池田先生位于牧口公园（八王子，东京），以照相机捕捉户田先生所喜爱的樱花树。 恩师的雕像也像似凝视着蔚蓝天空底下闪烁的樱花。 《学会健儿之歌》的原曲出自于日本陆军的《战阵训》的旋律中。《学会健儿之歌》又被称为《日本男子之歌》。 后来梅木三郎重新填词，注入学会勇猛精进，永不言败的大精神。
