Like the waterfall, fierce
Like the waterfall, unflagging
Like the waterfall, unfearing

Daisaku Ikeda, Oirase Waterfalls. Aomori, Japan. August 1994

"Waterfall" is a poem that calls forth the fighting spirit — to live an indomitable life, like the waterfall, like the mentor.

In June 1971, President Ikeda visited the Oirase Gorge in Towada, Aomori Prefecture with comrades from the Tohoku region. There, witnessing the gushing waterfall, he composed the poem. A pioneering band member from Aomori Prefecture, Sakurada Takeo composed the melody 2 years later.

This poem reminded President Ikeda of the courageous Kansai members who stood outside Nakanoshima Civic Hall on the day of the Osaka Rally in 1957. In their hearts, they were calling out for justice while the torrential rains poured down on them like a waterfall. To President Ikeda, these members were unsung champions who carried with them the noble bearing of kings.

In June 1994, the University of Glasgow (UK) conferred an honorary doctorate to President Ikeda.

“It was with this poem of mine that he (Dr. J. Forbes Munro) concluded his official citation on the occasion of my conferral of an honorary doctorate from that prestigious institution.”

After reading President Ikeda’s poetry collection translated by the world renowned Dr. Watson, Dr. Munro felt that the poem was the best portrayal of President Ikeda’s life, matching his image of courageous, ceaseless striving, of advancing bravely and unflaggingly.

“It was a grand, noble and solemn occasion. Dr. Munro, the university Clerk of Senate, mentioned the name of Josei Toda several times during his citation. Touching on my meeting with my mentor, he said, 'It was in 1947, . . . that his life assumed its main direction — when he [President Ikeda] met, and became a disciple of, Josei Toda.'”

Nothing could have made President Ikeda happier than to be a graduate of "Toda University". To President Ikeda, his encounter with his mentor sixty years ago then was indeed a life-changing experience that placed his life on a course towards victory. Following that were six decades of fierce, unflagging and unfearing struggle for him as he battled continuously against slander and abuse, hatred and jealousy just as his mentor instructed. But together with true-hearted fellow members, President Ikeda kept advancing boldly and cheerfully.

“Being able to dedicate such wonderful honors to my great mentor and to my noble comrades — this is the pride of my six decade spiritual struggle, in which I have striven unceasingly for our cause, just like the waterfall.” (Jan 2007)

Two months after the ceremony at the University of Glasgow, in August 1994, President Ikeda revisited Tohoku training centre in Aomori Prefecture. From the centre, which is located near Lake Towada and surrounded by lush greenery, the refreshing sound of waterfalls along the Oirase Gorge could be heard.

After a gap of 16 years, President Ikeda visited the Oirase Gorge and photographed the majestic waterfall.
