Lyrics : Shin'ichi Yamamoto
Music : Shin'ichi Yamamoto

In the field of wilderness, we exert together,
Like a dignified white horse
     galloping towards the future
Let’s set out for battle now,
the courageous warriors of the century
My friends and I, strive for kosen-rufu

In the glow of the rising sun,
     eyes sparkle with burning passion
The compassion of the Buddhist philosophy
is the glory of Bodhisattva of the Earth,
Oh! Revolutionary intellects shine radiantly
My friends and I, strive for kosen-rufu

In the present vast river of humanity
forms the great torrent of humanism
Ceaselessly sharing the Buddhist philsophy
     like the undying silvery ripples
Creating a new page in history,
taking the helm of this ship
My friends and I, strive for kosen-rufu
My friends and I, strive for kosen-rufu

Students of the first senior class of Soka University, 1974

This song “Strive for Kosen-rufu” was first presented on 30th June 1978 at the Students’ Division leaders meeting to commemorate the 21st anniversary of its formation.

The Students’ Division was formed in the year 1957, where President Ikeda was immersed in the battle against the whirlpool of evil and authoritarianism.  Hence, the Students’ Division was a gathering of wise and courageous members to be in the frontline of this battle to protect the defenceless common people.

In this commemorative meeting, Students’ Division chief described to everyone the process of how President Ikeda exerted every ounce of his energy in writing this new song “Strive for Kosen-rufu”.

Two days ago on 28th June, the representatives from Students’ Division showed President Ikeda the lyrics of the new Students’ Division song. President Ikeda then placed the lyrics in front of the Joju-Gohonzon at Soka Gakkai Headquarters bearing the inscription of “For the Fulfillment of the Great Vow for Kosen-rufu through the Compassionate Propagation of the Great Law”, which he then chanted sincerely before editing the song.

Looking at the lyrics of the new Students’ Division song, President Ikeda thought, “Now is the time that the Students’ Division makes a fresh departure towards the 21st century. The era to carry out the shared struggle of mentor and disciple and passing the baton of such spirit has arrived. I should write a song filled with hope and expectations as a gift to them…”

President Ikeda said to the representatives of the Students’ Division, “Students’ Division is very important. Therefore, I would like to write a song for you, a Students’ Division song for future generations, a song to be passed down eternally. Let’s complete the tune by today. I would do everything for your sake.  The future will depend on you.  Let me share the lyrics verbally while you write them down.” President Ikeda closed his eyes and remained silent for a while. He then recited the lyrics word by word.

“In the field of wilderness, we exert together”, the word “wilderness” did not mean wild, uncultivated lands, but a broad and expansive field. “Field of wilderness” emphasized the infinitely bright future of the Students’ Division where their stage would be immense and boundless.  Everyone must soar into the world.

The next phrase, “Like a dignified white horse galloping towards the future” signifies a joyous departure towards the entire world.  In the next phrase, “Let’s set out for battle now, the courageous warriors of the century”, the phrase “set out for battle” embodies the meaning to completely overcome against all odds while the phrase “the courageous warriors of the century” refers to the heavy responsibilities that the great leaders of the 21st century carry upon themselves.

At the last line of every verse, “My friends and I,  strive for kosen-rufu” signifies not only thinking about oneself, but standing in the shoes of troubled friends, strengthening friendship and advancing together with comrades.  “Strive” means spirited action.  Youth should not indulge in idealism and empty, meaningless words.  In order to “strive for kosen-rufu”, the first thing one must do is to decide to devote one’s life for kosen-rufu.  Furthermore, one must strive for the ultimate goal of kosen-rufu at every single moment in one’s life.

During his speech at the commemorative meeting, President Ikeda expressed his high hopes and expectations on the Students’ Division. Thunderous applause continued ceaselessly after he had finished. “All of you possess tremendous talents and capabilities!  Even so, you must never backslide in your faith throughout your life!  Now is the crucial time -  to mutually encouraging one another, never forgeting to exert every effort in our activities.  Everyone has to follow the organization, and grow into true leaders of the organization.”

After the choir sang this new song, under the request of President Ikeda, the song was sung several more times. Finally, when President Ikeda suggested everyone to sing in chorus, a youth cried out from amongst the audience, “Sensei, let’s sing the song shoulder to shoulder!  Is that fine?”

The youth put their arms over one another’s shoulders, forming a huge, gigantic wave that swings left and right, seemingly symbolizing the unstoppable currents of the new age. President Ikeda gazed intensely at this sight, determined to use his eyes to engrave the faces of everyone.

This song does not only restrict within the Students’ Division. Within a short period, it became a song well-loved by all members around Japan.  The students made a vow to exert their fullest in every challenge in the vast field of their mission.  Being the courageous warriors of the new century, the students leap onto the stage of this new age!  They became the glorious and revolutionary students of wisdom who embrace compassion and philosophy!  Trailblazing the dialogue of justice and righteousness, they create the eternal history of peace!
