Lyrics : Shin'ichi Yamamoto
Music : Tomohiko Suganuma

Ah, the crimson dawn is breaking!
Shining young heroes,
    pathfinders, pioneers!
Strike the morning bell
    and make it sound!
What are these raging
    arrogant billows to us?
Those of wicked intent
    will never know glory.
The justice and truth
of the Bodhisattvas of the Earth
is marked by the banner of the
   common people.

Scorning those who seek
   fame and fear criticism,
let them fall away and be forgotten.
We will continue to ascend
    the way of the king.
Embracing our mentor's ideal in
   Water Margin.
He urges us to grow into trees
that will tower high above him.
Ah, the golden glistening
   sweat of youth.
Cast a rainbow across
the indigo blue sky of our vow.

Protect without fail
    the castle of kosen-rufu.
Constructed by our now aged parents.
Rising into the
dazzling light of the far horizon
Youthful wings beat with fresh vigor.
Together singing the poems and songs
    of ten thousand leaves
    let us advance.
With proud and dignified step
let us advance, into the new century!

Passionate Crimson Sun at Sea of Seto near Shikoku Training Centre, place of the birth of Kurenai no Uta

"Song of Crimson" was created in the era when justice upheld by Soka Gakkai was in the brink of being covered by the dark cloud of injustice. It was with this background that this song was written in November 1981.

Leading up to President Ikeda being forced to step down in 1979, betrayers and ingrates from within and outside Soka Gakkai began to plot against the organisation. This injustice had brought members anger and agony. Especially so to the Shikoku members, the incorrigible acts of the evil Nichiren Shoshu priests brought to them nothing but worries and sufferings.

During that period of time, President Ikeda’s movement was being restrained by the priesthood. “If that is the case, we will go and meet you!” After setting their determination, nearly a thousand Shikoku members boarded the ferry named Sunflower 7 on 14th January 1980 that sailed across the rough winter sea to seek their mentor at the Kanagawa Culture Centre.

President Ikeda stood at the jetty, braving the cold wind, embracing each and every one of the members arriving. He encouraged the members by saying the more tempestuous the devilish function, the stronger should be their heart to battle against them. On the departure day, President Ikeda turned off all the light in Kanagawa Culture Centre and from the top floor, he waved his torchlight sending them off. Moved by the mentor’s sincerity, the members shed tears. Amidst the swaying lights in the dark sea, they set their vow — to prove the righteousness of their mentor and to advance kosen-rufu together with him in this lifetime.

With the passionate desire that "Shikoku must welcome President Ikeda", the youth division held the "President Ikeda’s Peace Movement Exhibition" for a duration of one month with 60,000 people attending, thus creating a surge in the momentum of expansion. Their wish came true when President Ikeda finally visited Tokushima (Capital of Shikoku) on 9th November 1981. Over a period of a week, President Ikeda travelled around Shikoku, giving encouragement to members. This was his first local guidance trip since he was forced to step down.

In the evening of 12th Nov, a discussion meeting for President Ikeda and some representatives of the Youth Division was held at Shikoku Training Centre in Aji, Kagawa Prefecture. To express their vow and determination to their mentor, the youth made an abrupt decision the night before to write a Shikoku YMD Song. To compose this new song of justice, to open up a new path for kosen-rufu, the youth welled forth tremendous life-force, verse after verse, with miraculous power.

They worked through the night and having eyes sparkled with earnestness and passion, they presented the song to their mentor in the discussion meeting the following day, “Sensei, please infuse your spirit into this song!” Over the next few days during his stay in Shikoku, President Ikeda made repeated revisions. It was an earnest struggle waged in the brief intervals between events in his tightly packed schedule. After seeking everyone’s understanding, President Ikeda changed the title to "Song of Crimson".

“The outcome must be determined right from the first sentence at the onset. To start with the darkness before dawn does not serve its purpose. Let’s start with ‘the crimson dawn’.” Furthermore,  “the melody should be ascending” and President Ikeda immediately hummed a tune.

For the second verse, the original draft contained the phrase "Some seek praise and fear criticism", but President Ikeda revised it to "Scorning those who seek fame and fear criticism". His wish was to infuse the lyrics with the "Spirit of Soka" — to forge triumphantly ahead through the turbulent seas of society, without concern for the vagaries of public opinion.

The term in the lyrics "the way of the king" meaning benevolent rule is an ideal upheld in the novel ‘Water Margin’ as mentioned by President Toda. This term was used to declare the starting point of Soka Gakkai. Embracing the mentor’s ideal, we walk "the way of the king". This ideal is in direct contrast to the behaviour of the priesthood displaying "the way of the tyrant". Thus the lyrics were edited based on this spirit.

The next sentence "He urges us to grow into trees that will tower high above him" expresses the mentor’s expectation in the great development of his youthful successors.

"Constructed by our now aged mothers" expresses the respect for the mothers of kosen-rufu. During the HQ leaders meeting in April 2005, President Ikeda further added the word "fathers" into the lyrics.

Through more than 20 corrections in the four days before President Ikeda left Shikoku, he infused the song with intense spirit. He put his heart and soul into impacting his thoughts to the youth, “Perfect lyrics of ‘Those of wicked intent will never know glory’. This I declare!”

“Finally, the thick clouds split open and the blazing sun shines, penetrating through my gloomy heart. I will forever remember those firm and resounding voice.” President Ikeda continues, “I am moved. I am filled with joy. I am convinced about the future advancement of the Gakkai. Because the mentor and disciple are in one mind.”

At last, the song was completed on the night of 14th November. "Song of Crimson" was immediately widely sung amongst nationwide YMD and became YMD’s favourite. Through the passion, determined lyrics and powerful melody, the YMDs began to powerfully advance in unity towards an era of justice and victory. This song symbolizes the start of the "offensive turnaround" against the obstacles of kosen-rufu and the sufferings endured by pioneers.

Embodying the spirit of battling against evil, the path of mentor and disciple, the passion of youth and the determination of the successors, this song brings great courage and hope for comrades battling the mission of the advancement of kosen-rufu.

President Ikeda commented with regards to the significance of this song, “The crimson sun signifies burning passion. The scene of dawn expresses youth’s battling mission.” Similar to the first light piercing through darkness, youth singing the "Song of Crimson" courageously battles the storm of obstacles and devils.
