Background
President Ikeda with his mentor, 1956 This song was first presented on 1st May 1946 during the first Soka Gakkai leaders meeting after the war. Though attended by only a dozen people, that meeting was recognized as an event of historic significance.
After receiving the commitment of the audience to dedicate their lives to the cause of kosen-rufu, President Toda abruptly stripped off his jacket and raising one arm, began to sing the “Song of Comrades”. Tears glittered in his eyes. As the leaders joined in the singing of the song, twice, three times, they gradually sensed the full impact of President Toda’s determination. During the wartime clampdown on the Soka Gakkai by the ruling militarist authorities, President Makiguchi was arrested. President Toda, who was also imprisoned with his mentor, had a deep awakening to his mission in prison. While chanting in his cell and concentrating all his energy on seeking life’s ultimate truth, President Toda had a profound inner awakening that he had been among the Bodhisattvas of the Earth at the assembly of the Lotus Sutra. This song, composed by President Toda while he was in prison, expresses not only his deep awakening, but also his great determination to stand alone to achieve kosen-rufu. This song was his deep cry of resolve. “Who do you think these great Bodhisattvas are? We, ourselves! Knowing this, I now declare, even if no one lifts a finger to help me, I, Toda, will achieve kosen-rufu.” President Toda was very strict towards those who led the song. “You are not qualified to lead the song if you do not understand its meaning!” President Ikeda once commented that this song is itself the Gakkai spirit and the spirit of the successive presidents. President Toda’s dearest wish was for the appearance of young people to whom he could entrust the mission of kosen-rufu when he would no longer be here. He frequently sang “Song of Comrades”, and when he came to the lines “I do not begrudge my life, but where are the young flag bearers?” he would look at President Ikeda with a piercing gaze. His look seemed to say: “I am counting on you after I am gone. Do you understand?” Thirteen years after his release from prison, on 16th March 1958, a dress rehearsal for kosen-rufu was held. It was a gathering that would symbolize the future accomplishment of kosen-rufu, a ceremony at which he would transfer to the youth – who would shoulder the future – the mission and full responsibility for accomplishing that goal. It was a beautiful gathering in which 6000 youth offered their pledge to President Toda to achieve the great desire for kosen-rufu. By then, Soka Gakkai has surpassed the membership of 750,000 households, a goal that President Toda set to achieve during his lifetime. President Toda, sensing that everything was complete, felt all of his remaining energy drained from his body, but it was a good feeling -- a fulfilled sense of exhaustion. He was reminded of the lyrics of "Song of Comrades", which he had composed: I do not begrudge my life, But where are the young flag bearers? Can you not see Fuji's summit? Rally now, quickly, in growing numbers! Now, the youth he spoke of in these lyrics had gathered around him in large numbers, standing up bravely to hold aloft the banner of the Mystic Law. In his mind, President Toda recalled the image of his mentor, President Makiguchi, who died in prison. He clearly remembered how he had been the only disciple his mentor could really count on to carry on the movement in the future. And now these young people he had nurtured under his wing had gallantly embarked on their own long march toward kosen-rufu. President Toda addressed President Makiguchi in his heart: "Sensei! I have inherited your will and secure the lasting foundation for kosen-rufu; I have now entrusted the entire future to my own beloved disciples. You will continue to pulse with fresh and vibrant energy in their veins. The day is not far off when the flame of kosen-rufu will spread throughout Asia and to the entire world." President Toda pictured his mentor smiling warmly and nodding his approval. President Ikeda, who was walking alongside President Toda, could sense from his mentor’s emaciated features that his life was drawing to a close. As he gazed up at his mentor, President Ikeda made a silent solitary pledge: "Sensei! We, your disciples, will definitely accomplish kosen-rufu. Please rest assured!" On 17th June 2006, the City of Certaldo, Tuscany Region, Italy named a park “Josei Toda Garden” in honor of second Soka Gakkai President and in appreciation of President Ikeda’s efforts for peace. During the ceremony, the Mayor and SGI Italy General Director together unveiled the commemorative plaque to the accompaniment of “Song of Comrades”, the favourite tune of the second Soka Gakkai president. The plaque lauds President Toda as a philosopher of human revolution who struggled against the Japanese militarist during World War II and strove throughout his life to build a peaceful society. It also bears a quotation of him urging people to live true to themselves and to make positive changes to secure their own happiness. |
