Mother,
What wondrous nourishing power you have!
Were it not for you in this world,
People would lose the earth to return to,
And wander for all eternity.

Mother, our Mother
Persevering through the storm,
You offered prayers in sadness.
I pray you’ll stay in good health until the day
When all your wishes are fulfilled,
And as though endowed with wings,
You take flight towards the heavens.

Mother, with your ideas and wisdom,
I hope you will perform a melody of
   peace on earth,
Where we will look forward to
   the arrival of spring,
Thus you will become the Mother of
the Century of Humanity.

Carrying his elderly mother, Ichi, at Fujinomiya. Shizuoka Prefecture, April 1975

This song "Mother" was composed in memory of President Ikeda’s mother, Ichi (1895-1976), and was completed only a month before she passed away.

The song was first presented during a Women Division training course on 5th August 1976 at Soka University in the presence of President Ikeda. The lyrics of this song originated from President Ikeda’s poem carrying the same name dedicated to his mother. It was introduced 5 years ago during Kansai Women Division Leaders meeting at Shizuoka Training Centre on 4th October 1971.

This song has 3 verses and 19 lines in Japanese. However, the original poem on which this song is based, consists of 26 verses and 184 lines. Although condensed to only a tenth of the original length, the lyrics are imbued with feelings of love and affection for his mother, Ichi, who had maintained a gentle and cheerful disposition despite having undergone the bitterness of war.

President Ikeda specifically delegated the task of composing the melody to music university graduates, Mariko Matsumoto and Mami Matsubara. Although Ms Matsumoto and Ms Matsubara had little experience in melody composition, both of them worked very hard in response to their mentor. Finally, the song was completed with a beautiful melody and a poetic feel.

While the song overflows with sentiment towards President Ikeda’s own mother, it has become a symbol for the indubitable role mothers all around the world plays. It is because of this reason that this beautiful song possesses a universal appeal that deeply moves the hearts of those who listen to it.

President Ikeda also commented, “I wrote this poem in appreciation of the many praiseworthy mothers who have dedicated themselves to countless activities for people’s happiness and peace throughout the world.”
