The youthful days of Ikeda Sensei and his friend having a heart-to-heart dialogue at Morigasaki Beach The song ‘Morigasaki Beach’ has its lyrics written first as a poem by Ikeda Sensei in 1947 and the melody produced in later years. This song was first sung to Ikeda Sensei at an event held in Ota Ward in 1973. Its lyrics is imbued with poetic content depicting the scenic exchange Ikeda Sensei had with a close friend at the beach of Morigasaki.
In an explanation made by Ikeda Sensei during his visit to the Saint Peter's Basilica church in October 1961, he said, “I have a friend who became Christian. We were very close. Right after the war, when I was living in Morigasaki, we started a reading group and studied literature and philosophy together. He had many serious personal problems that led him to try Christianity. This was just before I joined the Soka Gakkai. Later we both moved and lost contact with one another, but to this day I pray for his happiness. True friendship never fades.” As he spoke, Ikeda Sensei reminisced the days of his youth when he sat on the beach at Morigasaki in Omori, Tokyo, conversing with his friend. Ikeda Sensei was 19 years old then and Japan was in a chaotic state following the end of the war. In the void left by the collapse of previously dominant values, intelligent and concerned young people devoured literature and philosophy, trying to quench their sharp spiritual thirst. Ikeda Sensei’s friend was also one of these avid readers. After their reading group meetings, Ikeda Sensei often walked along the shore at Morigasaki with his friend, exchanging views about life and philosophy. Sometimes they would compose impromptu poems and recite them to each other. One day his friend came to confide in him about his problems. He was poor, had a difficult family situation, mistrusted others and had been disappointed in love. Occasionally, he broke into tears as he poured out his heart to Ikeda Sensei. His friend was like a tiny boat tossed about on the stormy seas of destiny, seeking desperately for a port - a goal in life, a way to spiritual salvation. This led his friend to begin attending a Christian church. One beautiful moonlight night, as the two young men sat discussing the meaning of life on the seashore of Morigasaki, Ikeda Sensei’s friend turned to him and declared, "Ikeda, I've decided to give Christianity a try. I’m beginning to think that unless a person has some belief in God in his heart, he cannot believe in others or in himself. I don’t know what this God is yet, exactly, but when I read the Bible I feel comforted and begin to feel I can believe in him.” There were things about Christianity that attracted the young Ikeda Sensei as well, but he also felt there were some contradictions in its teaching. Still, he wanted to respect his friend’s decision. And as yet he had no firm philosophy to offer his friend as an alternative to Christianity. This exchange took place just before Ikeda Sensei’s fateful encounter with his mentor, Toda Sensei. Ikeda Sensei said, "If that’s what you want to do, I think it’s fine. I just want you to be happy. That is all I care about. I think the path I will choose will be different, but I hope you will find something in Christianity that will help you live a wonderful life. I am suffering from tuberculosis right now and my life is also hard. But I want to overcome every obstacle and live a courageous life, contributing to society and humanity. Let's both persevere!" Ikeda Sensei extended his hand and the two exchanged a firm handshake. Silver waves danced in the moonlight and the chirping of insects mixed with the lulling sound of the surf. The two young men nodded, smiled at each other and went their separate ways. Ikeda Sensei recorded that exchange with his friend in a poem, which he titled 'Morigasaki Beach'. In the same explanation made in Saint Peter's Basilica church, Ikeda Sensei said, 'Religion exists solely and exclusively for the sake of human beings. The sanctity and dignity of human life ought always to be its top priority. Discriminating against others because of religions‘ differences is utterly wrong. The fundamental spirit of Buddhism and the eternal unchanging rule of the Soka Gakkai is that each of every individual, regardless of religion belief, be accorded supreme respect. Why? Because the purpose of Buddhism and of genuine humanism is to achieve peace and enable each individual to become happy." Ikeda Sensei shared these memories with the young people travelling with him in the same expedition to Europe, "If I ever have the chance to meet that friend again, I would like to talk to him about life and tell him about Buddhism. Teaching Buddhism to others begins with friendship. You can only have a true dialogue when you respect the other person." In the year 1976, the 2nd Soaring Group General Meeting was held at Ota Ward Gymnasium in Tokyo, which was just a thirty-minute’s walk from Morigasaki Beach. When the general meeting was over, in response to the wishes of participants from Tohoku, Chubu, Kyushu and other regions, student division leaders in charge of the night school students took them to Morigasaki Beach. Morigasaki Beach had already changed dramatically from the scene described by Ikeda Sensei in his poem of the same name, and there was no longer any trace of “pungent seaside smell/ waves withdrawing” or “On the crumbling embankment/ grasses grow thick/ voices of insects…..” This was explained to the members in advance, but even so, they wanted to stand on the seashore that held memories for their mentor in youth. The shoreline had been filled in and cemented over. A highway and monorail ran overhead. Still, they all looked at the sea and took a deep breath. They were imagining the nineteen-year old Ikeda Sensei talking with his friend on the beach under the moonlight, as the waves lapped the shore. They were thinking of Ikeda Sensei's pure heart as he wished for the happiness of his friend who, after intense soul-searching, had chosen to become a Christian. “Let’s sing ‘Morigasaki Beach’!” The members put their arms on one another’s shoulders and began singing on the seashore at sunset. The poem “Morigasaki Beach" written by Ikeda Sensei was published in a poems collection titled ‘Score of Youth’ in 1972. When a YMD member in Ota Ward read this poem, he perceived the beauty and romance of this poem with excitement and the melody spontaneously emerged from his mind. This melody was later presented at a Youth Meeting and it was extremely well received. Gradually this song was widely sung in various places in Ota Ward. This song was first presented to Ikeda Sensei by the members on the occasion of a commemorative photography event held in Ota Ward on 29 April 1973. Ikeda Sensei was deeply touched by the song and sincerely thanked the members. He further proposed to have this song recorded for the reason that it was widely praised by the members in Ota Ward. Since then, ‘Morigasaki Beach’ became a song to be sung widely in Japan. |

 池田先生与友人在森崎海岸边 歌曲《森崎海岸》的歌词出自于池田先生在1947年所写的诗，而旋律是在后期创作的。这首歌在池田先生出席的1973年大田区活动上首次发表。歌词浸染着池田先生与友人在森崎海岸诗意般的交流。
