Background
Ikeda Sensei walking round the stadium encouraging membersat the 3rd World Peace Culture Festival (August 1983) The SGI song ‘March Towards the 21st Century’ was first introduced in the 3rd World Peace Culture Festival held at Atsuta Village, the hometown of Toda Sensei, in Hokkaido (Present-day – Ishikari City, Atsuta Ward) in August, 1983.
On the day of the Culture Festival, 60,000 participants including the 2000 overseas members sang in unison the newly introduced song of ‘March Towards the 21st Century’. The delightful voices of singing accompanied by the rhythmic marching melody reverberated in the Makomanai Open Stadium. The intent of composing a SGI song for this Culture Festival was announced in September of the previous year. The works composed by friends from all over the world were collected with no consideration to age, nationality, professionalism or amateurism. As a result, 436 entries of music composition from the 12 countries of the 5 continents such as Japan, USA, Canada, France, Ghana, Australia and Argentina were collected. From these collection, ‘March Towards the 21st Century’, composed by a professional musician Hugh Burns of SGI-UK, was selected as the finest work in the final review on 1 July 1983. During the memorial award presentation in the 4th SGI General Meeting held 2 days after the Culture Festival, Mr. Burns spoke about his joy, “the music composition became the best memories of my musical life”. He further shared his feeling of which the music was composed under the deep emotion he felt from his encounter with his mentor Ikeda Sensei at the Europe Training Centre in Trets, France. Concurrent with the announcement of this new song, ‘March Towards the 21st Century’ was widely sung across the whole country of Japan along with the joy of SGI’s solidarity that spread throughout the world. It is a song that has loudly been sung of ‘the construction of peace’, ‘hope’, ‘freedom’ and ‘the disposition to open up the history of the 21st century’. Ikeda Sensei shared that music is a language common to the whole world and it creates an understanding that transcends the differences in culture and ethnicity. He further stresses that peace exists where there is music. ‘March Towards the 21st Century’ is the collective development of SGI’s solidarity in peace and goodness and will continue to be sung by the SGI members throughout the world from now on. |

背景
 第3届世界和平文化节 (1983年8月) 《迈向21世纪》这首歌是在1983年8月, 于北海道厚田村 - 牧口先生的家乡, 所召开的《第3次世界和平文化节》的纪念会中首次发表。
