Basked in the bright morning sun
Today, again, in high spirit
     Striving side by side
With fighting spirit
Regardless, during times of happiness
     Or during times of sadness
Our words to each other
Sensei   Sensei    Our Sensei

In the midday sun
Though drenched in sweat
     Our pedals remain light
Travelling through miles to seek for happiness
Regardless, during times of happiness
     Or during times of sadness
Our gaze to each other
Sensei   Sensei    Our Sensei

Looking up at the twinkling stars
Our hearts vowed
to wage a battle for the new century
Filled with boundless hopes for tomorrow
Regardless, during times of happiness
     Or during times of sadness
Our smiles to each other
Sensei   Sensei    Our Sensei

Ikeda Sensei looked upon the Women Division leader as she spoke in the meeting which launched the song,
"Let’s Be Spirited Today”

“Let’s be Spirited Today”, translated as “Forever Sensei” in United States, is a familiar song that is well-loved by the women division members in Japan and popular among SGI members throughout the world. The Japanese lyrics expressed spirited women division members, whose hearts burned with the passion and joy, working for kosen-rufu every single day. The song also has a bright melody and light-hearted rhythm.

In August 1968, the song was first performed by the Shirayuri (White Lily) Chorus at the Women Division Leaders Meeting commemorating the new departure of the Women Division held in the former Nihon University Auditorium.

Early 1968, a long poem written by Ikeda Sensei to the women division titled “Be someone who protect the dignity of life” greatly encouraged the women division members.

In order to create a song of a new era where women division can easily sing to encourage themselves, the representatives of the women division and the White Lily Chorus, including song-writer Teruko Watanabe, chanted seriously to produce the lyrics of the song. In the 1st verse, the dazzling morning sun that envelopes the entire body expresses the spirit of starting the day energetically. The 2nd verse portrays the image of pedaling rhythmically on the bicycle, going for activities. In the 3rd verse, after the activities ended, looking up at the sky and seeing the brilliance of twinkling stars, the heart is filled with hope and charged with determination for tomorrow.

The lyrics of the song portrays the daily activities of the women division in the morning, afternoon and evening; taking care of their household and children while brightly and cheerfully striving in Gakkai activities. The frank thoughts of the women division were also expressed directly. With light and passionate melody, the song gives an overwhelming dynamism and expresses the joy of the Women Division, who worked for kosen-rufu, advancing together with their mentor in life.

Ikeda Sensei attended the Women Division Leaders Meeting where the song “Let’s be Spirited Today” was launched. While the White Lily Chorus sang the song with bright and dynamic voices, Ikeda Sensei clapped and sang along. After which, Ikeda Sensei said, “This is a wonderful song. Let me take the lead!” Sensei then stood up and led the song. The graceful yet majestic manner that Ikeda Sensei danced, touched the hearts of the participants.

Ikeda Sensei personally felt a little embarrassed by the song. But for the women division, having the heart to always strive together with their mentor for kosen-rufu is an expression of them writing their history of “shared struggle of mentor and disciple”.

In 1978, at Mie Prefecture, the women division members have chosen and repeatedly practiced this song for the Cultural Choral Festival. However, the performance was cancelled last minute.

At this festival, priests from the Chubu area were invited. At that time, members' complete trust and respect for Ikeda Sensei invited criticism and attacks from the priests. Therefore, considering such circumstances, it was decided that the singing of this song be cancelled.

However, the women division were not happy with the decision. “Why can’t we? Why aren’t we permitted to sing a song that expresses our thoughts of seeking our mentor?”

They strongly felt that Ikeda Sensei’s guidance of faith has enabled them to overcome sufferings and become happy. Therefore, they are honored to be able to walk the path of mentor and disciple.

It is not just a matter of singing or not singing a song. It is their pride, their way of life that is being denied. “Why do I have to hide the respect I have for my mentor? That is ridiculous!”

The persistence of the women division bore fruits. Decision was made for the song to be sung at the Mie Prefecture Culture Chorus Festival. Ikeda Sensei said in a powerful voice, “I am looking forward to the chorus by the women division.”

A smile widened on Mie Prefecture Women Division Chief’s face. Her eyes were filled with tears. She telephoned the rehearsal venue to inform the performers at once. The announcement was greeted with cheers and great applause. The women division members wiped their tears with handkerchiefs.

The foundation of the organization lies in such sublime mentor and disciple spirit as demonstrated by the women division. Regardless of how much criticism, regardless of how the time changes, such “Soka Spirit” must never change. The great flow of kosen-rufu is born from this great pulsation of mentor and disciple.

This song expresses directly these hearts of the women division who strive for kosen-rufu. The rhythmical and dynamic song eventually crosses the sea and was sang among the SGI comrades around the entire world, including United States version of “Forever Sensei”, as well as in France, Brazil, Panama and South Korea.

Many comrades expressed that singing this song filled them with courage to surmount any obstacles. The passion for kosen-rufu and the heart of seeking out for the mentor is contained in the cheerful singing of "Let’s be Spirited Today" and echoes round the world today.
